JFIF vs PNG: what changes
A JFIF file is not some exotic format — it *is* a JPEG. “JFIF” (JPEG File Interchange Format) is the standard container JPEGs have always used, and Windows and Chrome occasionally save images with the .jfif extension instead of .jpg. The pixels are identical; only the name is unfamiliar, which is exactly why double-clicking one sometimes throws an error.

PNG is lossless, so from this point on no further detail is shed, and if you later need a transparent background you’ll be able to add one — something JPEG/JFIF can never store. Is JFIF to PNG lossless?
The PNG step is fully lossless and preserves every pixel decoded from the JFIF. Note the JFIF was already a lossy JPEG out of the camera or export, so PNG can’t recover detail that was discarded — it simply stops any further loss.
